Platyhelminthes: Trematoda

Below are representatives of both species of Allacanthochasmus known in North America: A. artus on the left and A. varius on the right. Both individuals shown here were recovered from a single white bass collected from the Trinity River, just outside of the Big Thicket National Preserve.

Various species of Crepidostomum are shown below, themselves from various species of fishes, including darters, sunfishes and basses, catfishes, and others.

Polylekithum catahoulensis (left 2 photos) was described in 2006 from Mississippi waters. Members of this species are common parasites of channel catfishes in the waters of the Big Thicket. A redescription of the species is underway, based on additional observations of these new specimens. Also from channel catfish are the specimens on the right (Prosthenhystera obesa) from the gallbladder (ruptured gallbladder at bottom of dish. Shown here are 2 worms in their live state. Members of this species are being studied by Dr. Stephen Curran at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory.

Below are 5 other common trematode parasites of fishes in the Big Thicket (more on the way). From left to right: Creptotrema funduli from Fundulus spp. (topminnows); Lissorchis sp. from Erimyzon oblongus (creek chubsucker); Phyllodistomum sp. from Ictalurus punctatus (channel catfish); Pisciamphistoma stunkardi from Lepomis spp. (sunfishes); Alloglossidium kenti from catfishes (Ictaluridae).

From left to right: Plagiocirrus loboides from Lythrurus umbratilis (Cyprinidae); and Prosorhynchoides potamoensis from Pomoxis annularis (Centrarchidae).
