The total data run-down

Here are the total numbers for the activities under this award. Thank you to all of the students, colleagues at Peru State, Sam Houston State, the National Park Service, and the collaborators, for all of their contributions to this work.

533 person-days in the Big Thicket and surrounding areas.

10 undergraduate students participated in some way in the award’s activities, and 9 went on 1 or more field trips, totaling 342 student-days in the field.

1,405 fishes collected and processed for parasites (2,045 fishes including those from the 6 years previous to the award).

76 species of fishes sampled from an average of 4.4 sites per fish species; 62 of those species completed according to the stop rules of the award.

38 locales in and around the Big Thicket National Preserve.

All aquatic units of the Preserve itself.

Published & in-press (as of June 1, 2017): 13 manuscripts (7 describing 8 new species; 4 with collaborators); in addition, 3 other species (including 1 new genus) and a redescription published prior to start of award.

Submitted and in-review (as of June 1, 2017): 4 manuscripts (3 describing 3 new species, including 1 key to species; 1 on myxozoan host associations).

Summary of 2016 and 2017 activities

Our fourth year resulted in the completion of a lot of data sets, species descriptions, and field work. We had good fortune in the field and the laboratory. The numbers follow:

159 person-days in the Big Thicket and surrounding areas.

4 undergraduate students went on various field trips, totaling 111 student-days in the field.

228 fishes collected and processed for parasites

40 species of fishes sampled.

13 locales in and around the Big Thicket National Preserve.

5 units of the Preserve itself.

3 students attended (1 presented) at the 2016 and 2017 Southwestern Association of Parasitologists.

4 new species descriptions published, the catfish biodiversity comparison published, and 7 other manuscripts in press or in review.

Summary of 2015 activities

Our third year was very productive, but also plagued a bit by high flood waters throughout southeastern Texas. Student participation in summer trips had to be limited for safety reasons, and our ability to collect in many riverine locales was limited, or prevented. Nevertheless, good things came of our efforts::

103 person-days in the Big Thicket and surrounding areas.

3 undergraduate students went on various field trips, totaling 54 student-days in the field.

229 fishes collected and processed for parasites

35 species of fishes sampled.

14 locales in and around the Big Thicket National Preserve.

8 units of the Preserve itself.

3 students attended (1 presented) at the Southwestern Association of Parasitologists.

2 students attended (2 presented) at the American Society of Parasitologists.

2 new species descriptions published, and the catfish biodiversity survey published.

Summary of 2014 activities

Our second year was an excellent field year, as well, significantly improving our collections of parasites and fishes. Here are the data:

149 person-days in the Big Thicket and surrounding areas.

4 undergraduate students went on various field trips, totaling 105 student-days in the field.

526 fishes collected and processed for parasites

49 species of fishes sampled.

11 locales in and around the Big Thicket National Preserve.

5 units of the Preserve itself.

4 students attended (2 presented) at the Southwestern Association of Parasitologists.

2 students attended (1 presented) at the American Society of Parasitologists.

2 new species descriptions published, 1 by a student, including the erection of a new genus of tapeworm.

Summary of 2013 activities

We had a very good first year in the field, and here are some numbers that characterize our efforts:

122 person-days in the Big Thicket and surrounding areas.

4 undergraduate students went on various field trips, totaling 72 student-days in the field.

422 fishes collected and processed for parasites

40 species of fishes sampled.

18 locales in and around the Big Thicket National Preserve.

5 units of the Preserve itself.

3 new species collected (ms. describing 1 in review).

Almost 100 total catfishes sampled now for Haley’s project.
