Purpose & Intent
The purpose of this site is to disseminate information on gregarine parasites to research scientists and members of the general public. Most of the new information presented here was developed with financial support from the National Science Foundation. Thus this web site partially fulfills our obligation to disseminate information as broadly as possible and to as wide an audience as possible.
The intent of this site is to present an inter-operative source of current information on all aspects of gregarine biology. The authors have no commercial interest in this site: our intent is purely to enhance education and education resources at all levels and to provide specialized information and resources for research scientists. It is our expressed intent NOT to infringe on the protected copyrights of others.
Disclaimer and Acknowledgement
The data and information presented on this web site is based in part upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 9705179.
Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.
For what it’s worth and not withstanding the aforementioned, you can pretty much bet that if the opinions, findings, and conclusions presented here didn’t reflect my views on gregarines, I wouldn’t have posted them.
How should you use the resources on this web site?
We ask that you use this site as you would a reference library. Please feel free to read, study, and browse but do not archive copies unless your archive falls under “Fair Use” exceptions to copyright protection. In many cases, the materials presented here may be obtained commercially. In other cases, texts and illustrations presented here are taken from materials in our personal libraries, in some cases, from what we believe to be the sole remaining original copies of important scientific publications that, for various reasons (usually date of publication), are not accorded copyright protection.
Who owns the copyrights?
Most of the materials on this site are copyrighted. The copyrights to most text, images, and sound files belong to those who created them. Exceptions include items done for hire and those for which the creators assigned their copyrights to others--for example, as a condition of publishing an article in a journal. Works published prior to 1978 are generally in the public domain unless notice of copyright was given upon publication. Notices were generally not given for articles in scientific journals.
To give credit to the creators of items on this site and to help users determine copyright ownership, we give the source for all scanned text and for most images. Images and text with no source indicated are our original work and we hereby declare our copyrights to these materials.

The University of Texas System has an excellent web-site that deals with copyright and fair use issues, including a very useful “four test rule” for fair use. I´ve found their site very helpful in understanding copyright and judging fair use. See their site by viewing

What uses may be made of copyrighted items on this site?
For items for which the developers of this site hold copyright, noncommercial, not-for-profit uses are permitted. Those wishing to incorporate items in a work to be offered for sale at a profit should get written permission from R. E. Clopton, Department of Natural Science, Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska 68421.
For items for which we do not hold copyright, potential users should contact the copyright owners directly.
The following have granted permission to use materials under their copyrights for noncommercial, not-for-profit purposes: The American Society of Parasitologists (Journal of Parasitology); The Society of Protozoologists (Journal of Protozoology, Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, excerpts from The Illustrated Guide to the Protozoa); The American Microscopical Society (Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, Invertebrate Biology). (Those wishing to use these items in a work to be offered for sale at a profit must get written permission from the copyright owners.)
Under what terms have we posted items whose copyrights belong to others?
In most cases we have permission. In other cases we deem our use to fall under the fair-use provisions of copyright law. These provisions permit certain uses of copyrighted works for teaching, scholarship, or research. What constitutes fair use depends on (a) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; (b) the nature of the copyrighted work; (c) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and (d) the effect of the use on the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. Copyright protects the particular way an author has expressed himself; it does not extend to any ideas, systems, or factual information conveyed in the work. Case law on the application of these guidelines is limited, and those who benefit from fair use are apt to interpret them differently from those who do not.
What if the owner of copyright of an item judges our use to be an infringement?
We will remove the item immediately unless there is a clear precedent that the use is not an infringement.
